What is the WAND Product and Service Taxonomy?
The WAND Product and Service Taxonomy is a structured vocabulary of over 82,000 product and service terms of which approximately 42,000 are preferred terms and approximately 40,000 are synonyms. Adhering to the ANSI Z39.19 standard for thesaural development, this taxonomy is the most extensive horizontal industry taxonomy in existence, with a unique combination of depth and breadth in coverage. The terminology is organized into a structure with broader terms, narrower terms, related terms, and synonymous terms to provide a simple and intuitive navigation experience. WAND has extended the precision of the vocabulary beyond its 82,000+ terms to include 1.3 million associated attributes and attribute values for classifying products and services down to the catalog level. The base terminology of the taxonomy, comprised of the 42,000+ preferred terms, is translated in to eleven languages.
How can the Product and Service Taxonomy be used?
Available in its entirety, or as vertical industry seed taxonomies, the Product and Service Taxonomy can be used in a variety of applications including knowledge management, content management, business directories, spend and sourcing management, SRM, e-catalogs, enterprise search, company data management, direct marketing, and to enhance data and applications already utilizing other industry classification standards, such as UNSPSC, SIC, NAICS, and HS.
How was the Product and Service Taxonomy developed?
The WAND Product and Service Taxonomy launched with 55,000 terms in 1996 and has grown ever since through continued updating and user feedback. The taxonomy is a controlled vocabulary developed with the guidance of library scientists, lexicographers, and industry experts. Each term and the associated set of attributes and attributes values is carefully considered and researched before its inclusion into the thesaurus.
The following industry taxonomies have been pre-packaged for delivery. They are available in multiple languages. Custom industry segmentation is also available.
- Agriculture and Forestry
The WAND Agriculture and Forestry Taxonomy covers products and services related to the fields of agriculture and forestry. It includes information on plants, animals, agricultural equipment and related supplies, timber, forestry and logging equipment. Services related to horticulture, crops, and animals are also covered.
- Arts, Crafts and Hobbies
The WAND Arts, Crafts and Hobbies Taxonomy covers products and services related to crafts and hobbies. The coverage includes art supplies, craft and hobby equipment and supplies and finished crafts. Material and supplies for displaying artwork, crafts and hobbies and services related to these areas are also included.
- Automotive
The WAND Automotive Taxonomy covers products and services related to the fields of original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and aftermarket parts for the automotive industry. It concentrates on performance parts but also includes some of the major accessories. The package is oriented to passenger vehicles: automobiles, motorcycles, sports vehicles, light trucks, etc. It does not attempt to include special vehicles such as fork lift trucks, tractors, emergency vehicles, military vehicles, etc. Automotive services including inspection, repair and maintenance are also covered here.
- Books, Music and Video
The WAND Books, Music and Video Taxonomy covers products and services related to the fields of books, music and videos. It includes books, periodicals, videos (in all formats), musical instruments and related equipment and supplies for recording and musical performance. In addition, services that cater to the publishing, music and video industries are also included.
- Building and Construction
The WAND Building and Construction Taxonomy covers products and services related to the building and construction industries. It includes construction materials and equipment, building components, flooring, lighting, paint and painting equipment, plumbing supplies, electrical supplies, tools, heating and cooling equipment and other related items. In addition, coverage includes heavy equipment and a wide range of construction services.
- Clocks and Watches
The WAND Clocks and Watches Taxonomy covers products and services related to clocks, watches, their respective parts as well as watch-making and repair.
- Communications
The WAND Communications Taxonomy covers products and services related to the field of communication. It includes telecommunications, communications technologies, sound recording and reproduction, television production and broadcasting as well as specific communications equipment.
- Computer & Information Technology
The WAND Computers and Information Technology Taxonomy covers products and services related to the fields of computer-assisted technologies, software and the basic computer equipment itself. Technology specific to the collection and use of information is covered here. Computer services range from basic technology management and maintenance to modeling and simulation services.
- Consumer Electronics
The WAND Consumer Electronics Taxonomy covers products and services related to the field of electronics primarily used by consumers for personal use. These include home entertainment systems, audio systems, televisions, telephones and parts and accessories related to these products.
- Education and Training
The WAND Education and Training Taxonomy covers products and services related to the field of training and education programs, kits, supplies and equipment. Educational services encompasses the full range of services from adult education, educational testing, library services, special education and schools.
- Electrical and Electronics
The WAND Electrical and Electronics Taxonomy covers products and services related to the fields of electrical and electronic parts, components, circuit boards, electrical supplies and power generation equipment. Services include electrical services such as testing, maintenance and repair and electronics consulting and manufacturing.

The WAND Environmental Taxonomy covers products and services related to environmental needs. It includes resource protection and management, equipment and supplies, testing and monitoring, compliance, recycling and hazardous materials management.

The WAND Fashion and Apparel Taxonomy covers products and services related to the fashion industry. It includes all types of garments as well as accessories, footwear, hats and services such as manufacturing and cleaning.
- Fine Art, Antiques & Collectibles
The WAND Fine Art, Antiques and Collectibles Taxonomy covers products and services related to these areas. It includes terminology for works of art, antiques, money and stamps and general collectable items as well as appropriate service.
- Food and Beverage
The WAND Food and Beverage Taxonomy covers products and services related to the food and beverage industry. It includes unprocessed and processed foods, meats, seafood, vegetables, and fruits as well as the equipment and supplies used to process, prepare and serve them. The WAND Home and Garden Taxonomy covers products and services related to the home and gardens fields. The WAND Metals Taxonomy covers products and services related to the field of metals. It includes metals in their primary forms, semi-finished products and metallurgy and metal working services.
- Minerals, Mining and Drilling
The WAND Minerals, Mining and Drilling Taxonomy covers products and services relating to the mining and drilling industries. Coverage includes ores, mineral fuels, petroleum and petroleum products, stone, mining and drilling equipment and associated services.
- Office Equipment & Supplies
The WAND Office Equipment and Supplies Taxonomy covers products and services related to office products. It includes office machines, data processing equipment, supplies for graphic arts, general office, shipping and school and office furniture.
- Packaging
The WAND Packaging Taxonomy covers products and services related to the packaging industry. It includes packaging equipment such as box making machines, filling and closing machines, containers, shipping supplies and packaging services.
- Personal Care
The WAND Personal Care Taxonomy covers products and services related to the personal care industry. It includes bath and beauty products, personal care appliances, perfumes and weight management products. Personal grooming and relaxation services are also included.

The WAND Photography Taxonomy covers products and services related to the field of photography. The WAND Safety and Security Taxonomy covers products and services related to the safety and security fields. It includes personal, corporate and military level security and safety products, industrial safety equipment, weapons, corrections and law enforcement products, fire fighting equipment as well as private and public safety and security services.

The WAND Science and Technology Taxonomy covers products and services related to the scientific and technical fields. These include test and measurement instruments, equipment and supplies for laboratory, optical, materials testing, meteorological, surveying and other technical uses. Testing, drafting and engineering services are among the services that are included.

The WAND Services Taxonomy covers products and services related to the service sector fields. It includes terminology to describe activities in business, entertainment, manufacturing, transportation, medical, educational, professional, retail, sports, information, government and agriculture as well as many other services.
- Sports and Recreation
The WAND Sports and Recreation Taxonomy covers products and services related to the fields of sports and recreation. It includes equipment for team and individual sports, athletic apparel, hunting and fishing equipment and products for athletic and recreational facilities. The sports and recreation services include facilities operations, clubs, instructional activities as well as specific recreational activities.
- Textiles and Leather
The WAND Textiles and Leather Taxonomy covers products and services relating to the textile and leather industries. It includes yarns, fabrics, fur, leather, textile and leather working equipment and supplies and leather and textile manufacturing services.

The WAND Toys and Games Taxonomy covers products and services related to the field of toys and games. It includes specific types of toys and games as well as game and arcade services.
- Transportation
The WAND Transportation Taxonomy covers products and services related to the transportation industry. It covers motorized and non-motorized vehicles, marine, railway and aircraft equipment and their associated parts and accessories. Also included are various transportation services including freight and passenger transportation as well as repair and maintenance services.
